When we started our industrial cleaning by dry ice blasting business we learned no workers compensation NCCI number for our business niche existed.  Our business was assigned the same number sandblasting companies have.

Abrasive blast media builds up underfoot creating a slip hazard. If deep enough it becomes a trip hazard.  Dry ice does not build up underfoot and cause slip or trip hazards.  Dry ice blasting leaves no secondary waste stream behind.

Sand on impact, fragments creating dust.  Causing a hazard to the respiratory system.  Dry ice on impact fragments into a dustless gas.  There is no dust created by the fragmentation of the dry ice cleaning pellets. 

When filling a blast pot heavy bags are lifted to the top of the pot.   How many back injuries and hernias has this caused?  When filling a dry ice cleaning machine a worker has to lift light shovels to the top of the machine.  Causing no back injuries or hernias at all.

When refilling an abrasive blast pot, it has to depressurize.  As the pot loses pressure, it loses its ability to keep the plunger closed or up.  The residual pressure release always seems to blow a small amount of sand towards the face of the pot tender.  When refilling a dry ice cleaning machine a worker simply opens the lid and shovels the pellets into the hopper and closes the lid.  There is no danger to the eyes.

To be fair, the hazards  of dry ice cleaning need to also be pointed out.  In confined space or poorly ventilated applications CO2 will displace oxygen causing a suffocation hazard.   Workers must use air monitoring equipment, proper ventilation blowers and/or air supplied respirators while working in confined spaces.  

The temperature of dry ice makes handling it with bare hands for more than a few seconds nearly impossible, it is -109F, so cold it burns.  Using gloves is a must.

I have tried to make a case for keeping the workers compensation expense of dry ice cleaning below that of sandblasting.  The things that I've stated above are true and can be confirmed by using a search engine and/or talking with those in the industry.
